Updating With A Domain Name
Matt Skallerud of Pink Media and the #ILoveGay Today video series welcome Roberto Muzzetta of Arcigay to speak about many ongoing initiatives and their reason for using a .LGBT domain to anchor the organization online.
Arcigay is one of the largest LGBTQ+ organizations in Italy, focused on making change at the national level, while maintaining a strong presence locally with over 70 chapters throughout the entire country. Leaders in the region and advocates on the front line of social and legislative change, Arcigay was among the first community organizations to adopt a .LGBT domain and further empower LGBT visibility on the Internet.
Muzzetta, who is the Head of Foreign Affairs at Arcigay speaks openly about the organization’s move to using www.arcigay.lgbt, claiming it was a “very seminal decision.”
“We started as a gay association, cis male, cis gender association,” says Muzzetta as he talks origins and the evolution to a more diverse and inclusive pool of members and volunteers. “We changed the description of our association from gay to LGBT and so we also of course got the domain name that mirrored this change.”
Arcigay is not the only community organization that has legal roots in a name or acronym that by today’s standards may not accurately represent the population they represent or serve, but a simple update to a domain name is an easy way to reframe the conversation and make a new statement.
